Acne – An Overview and Treatment Option

Acne refers to a variety of facial spots and blemishes, which may be inflammatory or non-inflammatory. Non-inflammatory acne are commonly called whiteheads or blackheads, while inflammatory acne, which are associated with pain, pus and pink-reddish coloration are called pimples.

Cause of Acne

The sebaceous (oil) glands present in the facial skin cells, due to certain triggers like stress, unhealthy diet or surge in hormones (during puberty) secrete extra sebum.  So, the pores get clogged preventing the exit of dead cells from the surface. The dead cells mix up with the excess sebum forming a composite that serves as an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria cause inflammation and the result is acne.

Impact of Acne

Besides the fact that acne can be painful, studies have shown that acne, particularly severe inflammatory acne has considerable psychological impact on teenagers and adults, undermining their confidence and affecting quality of their life.

Treatment for Acne

Drugs commonly prescribed for treating acne include isotretinoin and tretinoin available under the brand names Accutane and Renova respectively.

Accutane and Renova – Similarities and Differences

Both isotretinoin and tretinoin are derivatives of Vitamin A and help in acne treatment. But their mode of action and formulation are different. Accutane has a systemic mode of action as it is available as an oral pill. Renova has a topical mode of action, being available as a cream formulation.

How do they Work

  • Isotretinoin is believed to exert its effect by reducing the production of sebum. So clogging of the pores, which is the primary cause of acne, reduces and during the course of the treatment, the pores become completely free. This is manifested as no further breakouts occur, eventually clearing up of the skin. Typically a 16-20 week course of treatment is prescribed.
  • Renova works by increasing the skin cell production leading to quicker replacement of dead cells that contribute to the pore plug which leads to acne. It is extremely effective for the treatment of whiteheads and blackheads and may be found to be lacking for tackling severe inflammatory acne. A course of six to nine months is usually prescribed for effective results. Because Renova produces newer skin cells, it has an additional effect of removing fine wrinkles and lightening the skin.

A Word of Caution

Acquiring a blemish free skin may be your ultimate goal, but do consult your doctor prior to starting any medical treatment because both accutane and renova tend to produce side effects, some of which are quite serious.

Isotretinoin has been found to cause miscarriage in pregnant women undergoing treatment and even birth defects in the baby. Other side effects associated with both isotretinoin and tretinoin formulations include drying and peeling of skin. Additionally with accutane, you may experience urinary irritation, headache and depression.

However by following your doctor’s advice, it is possible to keep side effects at bay and ‘face’ the world in a confident way.
